Benue State governor, Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has disbursed scholarships to 55 children of officers who lost their lives in the course of service, particularly due to insurgent attacks while serving in Benue State.
Speaking during the disbursement of the scholarships in Makurdi, Governor Alia described the sacrifices of the fallen heroes as a testament that “peace is expensive.”
Technical adviser to governor on media, publicity, and strategic communication, Chief Solomon Iorpev, in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP said the governor emphasised that their sacrifices should not be in vain.
He said although they cannot be replaced, their sacrifices must not be in vain.
Governor Alia announced his resolve to sponsor the children of the fallen heroes in school, regardless of whether they were Benue citizens or not, as long as they served in the state.
He urged the people to see officers as partners against crime and called for support in their service to the nation.
The governor also highlighted the patriotism of the fallen heroes, saying their sacrifices show their commitment to protecting the sovereignty of the nation and assured the widows that he had provided funds to support them in starting small businesses, which would be disbursed upon profiling.
In addition, Governor Alia sponsored 23 children of Notre Dame Secondary School in Mkar, promising to continue to stand by them through their studies.
The governor encouraged them to see the relevance of a good education and urged them to make him proud.
“The event was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by security personnel in Benue State, and Governor Alia’s commitment to supporting their families and encourage children to commit to their education” the statement said.
