Nigerians are in for more economic challenges following the proposed increase in the price of sachet water popularly called ‘pure water’ from N200 to N300 per bag.

It is no doubt that most Nigerians rely solely on sachet water because of its chapter rate to substitute bottle water in the absence of a hygienic pipe-borne water supply in the country.

The Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP) said it had to increse the price from N200 to N300 per bag with immediate effect, because of the hike in the price of production materials.

The national president of the association, Mrs. Clementina Ativie in a press briefing, explained that the decision was unanimously reached during ATWAP national convention in Abuja on Wednesday.

Ativie said the change in the price was a result of the increase in the prices of materials, and the coupled economic situation of the country.

“We hereby declare that the price of sachet water popularly known as pure water is now N300 per bag as the company price. There will be no extra bags or extra pieces henceforth for wholesale or retail buyers, the increase in the price is due to the cost of the increase in production materials.

“The upward review of the price was also due to the economic situation of the country, the cost of production had gone far beyond what we can bear. The increase in the price is just to save our industry and for us to remain in business,” she said.

However, while speaking with some of the major producers of sachet water in Bwari area council of Abuja, they said they had been given the information about the increment, but were yet to conclude the issue.

One of the producers of sachet water in Kubwa village, Mrs. Chukwuma Ikenna, said she was not comfortable with the new price and that most of them were not consulted before the association took the decision.

“We were told on Friday that the price had been increased, but we have not implemented it yet, because we are yet to agree with the decision. We know that production materials are expensive, but N300 per bag is too much and should be reconsidered,” she said.
