Pep Guardiola has staunchly defended Phil Foden, asserting the playmaker will recapture his best despite a challenging season that has seen him lose his regular starting position.

Foden, the 2023-24 Premier League Player of the Season, started in Manchester City’s recent 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest, filling in for the injured Nico O’Reilly. However, his performance was subdued, highlighting his ongoing struggle for confidence and form since December.

The 25-year-old’s reduced playing time has coincided with increased competition from new signings Antoine Semenyo, Rayan Cherki, and Tijjani Reijnders. As City pursues Arsenal in the title race, Foden is battling for relevance within an evolving squad.

Ahead of the FA Cup fifth-round tie against Newcastle United, Guardiola offered a reassuring assessment of Foden. He acknowledged Foden isn’t at his “explosive best” but emphasized that a return to form is a “matter of process, not pressure.”

“I had the feeling he played really good [against Forest],” Guardiola told reporters. “But still we’re used to him being incredibly decisive in the final third, and that happens when you don’t lose much consequences, when you’re free in the final third.”

Guardiola believes a single “unlock” moment could reignite Foden’s season, restoring him as a key creative force for Erling Haaland. “These types of players, the big, big talents, have to be inside of some organisation… They have to express themselves. And the moment he unlocks a little bit one action, he’ll be back.“
