George Russell kicked off Formula 1’s latest ground-effect era in style on Sunday, cruising to a commanding victory in the Australian Grand Prix after an intense early duel with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
The Mercedes driver and Leclerc engaged in a thrilling wheel-to-wheel battle for the lead over the opening 10 laps, swapping positions multiple times. However, the race swung decisively in Russell’s favour when Ferrari opted to keep Leclerc out on track during a virtual safety car period—a strategy call that ultimately dropped the Monegasque out of victory contention.
Russell managed the race flawlessly from there, crossing the line comfortably ahead of his teenage Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli. Leclerc salvaged a podium finish in third, just holding off Lewis Hamilton in the sister Ferrari.
Reflecting on a chaotic but controlled victory, Russell admitted the win didn’t come without early drama.
“I’m feeling incredible. It was a hell of a fight at the beginning. We knew it was going to be challenging and I got on the grid and I saw my battery level had nothing in the tank,” said Russell.
“I made a bad start and obviously some really tight battles with Charles, so I was really glad to cross the finish line.”
McLaren’s Lando Norris managed to secure fifth place, fending off a charging Max Verstappen in the closing laps. The Red Bull driver produced a remarkable recovery drive from 20th on the grid to finish sixth.
Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri endured a nightmare home Grand Prix, crashing on the formation lap after losing control over a kerb and suffering a sudden power spike that sent him spinning into the barriers before the race even began.
Elsewhere, 18-year-old Arvid Lindblad made history as the youngest Briton to compete in Formula 1, delivering an impressive debut drive to finish eighth behind countryman Oliver Bearman in the Haas.
