REA Deploys 100% Metered Mini-grids For Non-stop Electricity Access

Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has launched a new generation of mini-grids equipped with 100 per cent metering to guarantee non-stop electricity for underserved communities, sidestepping the vulnerabilities that plague the national grid.

Speaking in an interview over the weekend, REA managing director, Dr Abba Aliyu emphasised how the agency has absorbed critical lessons from decades of national grid collapses.
“We’ve learned from the mistakes of the main grid, so every mini-grid we deploy includes a distribution network, 100 metering, and a SCADA system that allows performance to be monitored via a phone,” he stated.

These mini-grids target isolated rural and peri-urban areas, providing fully independent power through decentralised solar generation.

In communities without existing infrastructure, REA builds complete systems from the ground up, ensuring reliable supply without reliance on the centralised grid’s cascading failures.
For peri-urban zones already connected to Distribution Company (DISCO) networks but suffering frequent outages, REA adopts a collaborative hybrid model.

Under service-level agreements, REA’s solar plants supply daytime power, while DISCOs commit to nighttime delivery.

If DISCOs fall short, integrated battery storage systems automatically activate, maintaining seamless 24/7 access.

Dr Aliyu detailed the initiative’s ambition: REA is currently deploying 50 interconnected mini-grids capable of injecting 280 megawatts of stable power into the broader system. This networked approach enhances resilience, allowing mini-grids to support each other and even bolster the national grid during peak demand.By prioritizing full metering to curb losses, real-time SCADA monitoring for quick issue resolution, and redundant storage, REA aims to create a robust, future-proof energy architecture.

The strategy addresses longstanding challenges like vandalism, underinvestment, and technical faults that have left millions in darkness.Industry observers note this marks a shift from past mini-grid efforts, which often struggled with sustainability. REA’s data-driven design, informed by national grid post-mortems, positions the projects for long-term success and scalable replication across Nigeria.
