The killing of a 26-year-old woman, identified as Precious Mogaji, has been confirmed by the Oyo State Police Command in Ibadan, the state capital on Monday.
The command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, in a statement said investigations have begun to determine the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to the police, the incident was reported by a good Samaritan who discovered the victim lying lifeless at the entrance of her boyfriend’s room. The boyfriend, identified as 29-year-old Quadri Mohammed, is currently on the run.
Ayanlade explained that the incident occurred in the Oguntula area of Ojoo in Ibadan, contrary to earlier reports in some sections of the media which claimed it happened in Akobo.
“The Oyo State Police Command has commenced investigation into the alleged murder of a victim, one Precious Mogaji, female, aged 26 years,” the statement said.
He added that preliminary findings indicated that at about 12:05 a.m., the police were alerted by a passerby who reported discovering the victim’s lifeless body at the doorway of Mohammed’s room.
Acting on the information, officers from the Ojoo Division, including the patrol team and the incident duty officer, were immediately deployed to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the lifeless body of the victim was discovered on the floor at the doorway of the suspect’s room. The body was forensically examined and findings duly documented in line with established investigative procedures,” the statement said.
Police said the scene was photographed and documented before the corpse was evacuated to a hospital where it was deposited in the morgue for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
The command also dismissed reports suggesting the incident occurred in Akobo and involved a husband attempting to hide his wife’s body in a car trunk, describing the narrative as false.
Investigators said the victim’s boyfriend, Mohammed, has since fled, while efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend him.
The police urged members of the public with useful information that could aid the investigation to report to the nearest police station or contact the command, assuring that updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
