Former Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has officially pledged his international allegiance to Austria, despite his Nigerian heritage and upbringing in England.

The highly-rated Borussia Dortmund star, aged 22, was born in Vienna to Nigerian parents, making him eligible to represent the Central European nation.

Chukwuemeka had previously featured for England at various youth levels, from U-17 to U-20. However, the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has now formally approved his switch to Austria.

This paves the way for a potential senior international debut as early as this month. Austria is scheduled to face Ghana and South Korea in friendly matches on March 27th and 31st, respectively, offering Chukwuemeka an opportunity to earn his first cap for his birth country.
