The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has commended the Edo State Government (EDSG) for its proactive efforts to tackle irregular migration, reduce poverty, and support the reintegration of returning migrants.

The commendation came during a courtesy visit by the IOM Nigeria Chief of Mission, Dimanche Sharon, to Governor Monday Okpebholo in Benin City.

Sharon praised the administration’s commitment to ensuring that migration remains a choice rather than a necessity, noting that the state government has prioritised youth empowerment, skills development and job creation.

According to her, more than 500,000 youths have benefited from the state government’s skills development programmes.

She also disclosed that IOM, in partnership with the state government, has supported over 9,000 returning migrants, helping them rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society.

“Nigeria has a beautiful story to tell. Having visited 13 states in the past nine months, I see Edo State as a place with unique potential. I pledge to help highlight Nigeria’s positive story and reshape its narrative internationally,” she said.

Sharon further commended Edo State’s humanitarian and poverty-reduction initiatives, including support for fish farming, youth employment programmes and assistance to survivors of gender-based violence.

She added that IOM would explore additional areas of collaboration with the state, particularly in linking digital skills development with employment and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Responding, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to strengthen collaboration with IOM and other development partners to curb irregular migration and improve the livelihoods of residents.

The governor noted that cult-related violence had previously contributed to migration in the state but said significant progress had been made in restoring peace.

“In 2024, Edo State was plagued by cult-related violence which led to over 360 deaths. By 2025, we brought the menace close to zero, restoring peace and encouraging people to return,” he said.

Okpebholo stressed that his administration remains committed to maintaining peace and creating a business-friendly environment that will attract investment and improve citizens’ well-being.

“We are working to create a friendly environment that allows businesses to thrive and our people to live peacefully. The trust of Edo people drives us, and we owe it to them to deliver good governance,” he added.

The governor also highlighted the historical significance of Edo State, describing it as one of the oldest cities in the world and a location that once attracted Portuguese and British explorers.
