Army Chief Asks Officers To Reflect Religious Discipline In National Duties

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Waidi Shaibu, has directed Nigerian Army officers and soldiers to bring their religious discipline and dedication to bear on their national duties to overcome security challenges.

He said, “We will continue to do everything within our mandate to defend our democratic institutions and ensure that Nigerians can live without fear and go about their lawful socio-economic activities in peace and security.”

Shaibu spoke on Wednesday in Abuja during the combined breaking of fast with Muslim and Christian officers.

He said the convergence of the Lenten season and the holy month of Ramadan was significant as it “reminds us of the universal values that unite humanity, such as faith, sacrifice, discipline, compassion and devotion to God.”

Shaibu said both periods encourage deep reflection, self-restraint and a renewed commitment to righteous living.

The Army chief urged officers to draw lessons from the beauty of diversity in God’s creation.

“Our Creator, in His infinite wisdom, made people of different races, tribes, cultures and backgrounds. As we sit here today, we see people from different parts of our great country—different tribes, different languages, and different complexions. Yet, despite these differences, we are united by a common purpose and a shared commitment to the service of our nation,” he said.

According to him, diversity is one of Nigeria’s greatest strengths, adding that, “it reminds us that regardless of our ethnic or religious backgrounds, we must continue to work together in unity of purpose to advance the development, peace and stability of our country.”

The Army chief said personnel should learn from the period discipline and dedication.

“The commitment required to observe fasting and other religious obligations teaches us the importance of perseverance, patience, and self-control. These are qualities that are equally essential in the profession of arms.

“As soldiers of the Nigerian Army, we must carry this spirit of dedication and discipline into our duties. With renewed commitment and determination, we must continue to confront and overcome the various security challenges confronting our dear nation.”

He therefore urged all officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army to renew their commitment to its constitutional responsibilities.

In his welcome remarks, the Chief of Administration, Army, Major General I.S.A. Abdullahi, described the gathering as not only spiritual but also highly symbolic, as it reflects the unity, mutual respect, and shared purpose that define their service in the Nigerian Army.
