Women’s groups have called for greater participation in politics and decision-making in Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen inclusive governance.
The call was made at the just-concluded International Women’s Day Conference organised by the Chartered Institute of Project Managers of Nigeria (CIPMN) in collaboration with the WCCI Emerging Market Hub in Abuja.
At the event, the MD/CEO of Dominion Mothers Group, Kemi Josephine Elebute-Halle, a former governorship candidate in the Ekiti State 2022, elections, commended Nigerian women for their resilience, intellect and dedication to national development.
She said women continue to play critical roles in governance, community development, and nation-building.
According to her, the contributions of women across various sectors highlight the need for inclusive policies that empower them to thrive and participate meaningfully in political and economic decision-making.
“This year’s celebration reminds us of the strength and contributions of Nigerian women who continue to make a significant impact in governance and community development,” she said.
Elebute-Halle explained that the theme for this year’s celebration, “Give to Gain,” emphasises the importance of investing in women through mentorship, education, and leadership opportunities to foster societal growth.
“I have just been inducted as the Female Project Manager of the Year 2026 by the Chartered Institute of Project Managers of Nigeria. I am very happy and highly honoured to have been selected,” she said.
“We intend to move the female voice forward, especially in the areas of rights, justice, and action. I assure you that when we give, we gain, according to the theme of International Women’s Day 2026.”
She further stated that she has consistently supported individuals and communities through mentorship and empowerment initiatives.
“I have always been a natural giver. I have impacted the lives of women, single parents, single mothers, and even single fathers. I have helped many people go through school, and some are still in school today. Giving is a gift from God,” she added.
The registrar (Membership) of the institute, Hajara Yusuf, said the organisation was established to regulate project management practice and ensure that projects in Nigeria are executed to standard.
She added that the institute was created in 2018 after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari signed the bill establishing it into law.
Yusuf explained that the institute is committed to strengthening professional capacity and promoting inclusivity in project governance.
“Inclusivity, equity, and diversity are key Sustainable Development Goals, and the institute is committed to promoting women’s participation in project governance,” she said.
Similarly, Fatimah Momo, said March is globally recognised as International Women’s Month.
She said the celebration highlighted the importance of empowering women and promoting gender equality.
She explained that the event was organised by women’s rights advocate Zainab Mohamed and brought together gender advocates to discuss this year’s celebration theme.
“The theme ‘Give to Gain’ means that we must contribute positively to women’s development to enable women to make progress,” Onyilo said.
Meanwhile, the CEO, Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WCCI) Emerging Market Hub Ambassador Ambassador Zainab Mohammed called for stronger action to close gender inequality gaps in Nigeria, stressing that increased women’s participation in governance remains critical to achieving sustainable development and inclusive decision-making.
Mohammed noted that International Women’s Day is more than a date on the global calendar. It is a moment of reflection, recognition, and renewed commitment. It is a day that acknowledges the extraordinary contributions women continue to make across sectors—governance, business, technology, entrepreneurship, and community development. But beyond celebration, it is also a call to action.
This year’s theme, “Women in Project Governance: Catalyst for Renewed Hope in Project Delivery,” speaks directly to a critical reality in our societies today: the urgent need for accountable leadership, effective project execution, and sustainable development outcomes.
Around the world and across Africa, we are witnessing increasing recognition that inclusive leadership leads to stronger institutions, better decisions, and more impactful results.
Women bring unique strengths to governance and project management collaboration, resilience, long-term thinking, and a deep commitment to community impact. When women are included in the design, leadership, and oversight of projects, outcomes tend to be more equitable, more sustainable, and more responsive to societal needs.
”Our commitment therefore goes beyond advocacy. It is about building ecosystems—supporting women entrepreneurs, strengthening leadership pipelines, promoting financial inclusion, and creating platforms where women’s voices influence policy and governance.”
She stressed that let us remember that celebrating women is not only about honouring achievements; it is about investing in the future. It is about ensuring that young girls see possibilities where barriers once existed.
