A former presidential candidate and publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu, has predicted mounting political challenges for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that many political allies may abandon the president if their expectations are not met.
Momodu made the remarks during an appearance on Sunday Politics on Channels Television, where he spoke on the dynamics shaping opposition politics and the possible direction of the next presidential race.
According to him, Tinubu could soon face pressure from political figures who currently support him but may shift allegiance if their interests are not satisfied.
“In the coming weeks and coming months, Tinubu will begin to lose sleep when he sees the true colour of human beings,” Momodu said. “They are pretending like the rattlesnake, waiting and hoping that they will get something. When they can no longer get it, they will seek their fortune elsewhere.”
The media entrepreneur argued that the ruling All Progressives Congress could face internal dilemmas ahead of the next election cycle, particularly regarding its presidential ticket.
He suggested that the party may be divided over whether to retain Vice President Kashim Shettima on a joint ticket with Tinubu or replace him with a northern Christian candidate.
“Their own vice president, a very cerebral gentleman, is at a crossroads because the APC does not know whether it can risk a Muslim-Muslim ticket again,” Momodu said. “If they remove him, it may backfire, and if they retain him, it is a catch-22 situation.”
Momodu also questioned the assumption that the support of state governors would automatically translate into electoral victory for the president in 2027.
Drawing parallels with the 2023 elections, he cited the experience of members of the G5 governors’ group led by Nyesom Wike, noting that some incumbent governors lost their senatorial bids despite wielding significant political influence in their states.
“What gives Tinubu the confidence that he will be able to get the governors to deliver the votes for him?” he asked.
The former presidential aspirant further argued that opposition forces may rally around Atiku Abubakar if he chooses to contest again in 2027.
“After Buhari in the North, they have what I call a queuing system,” Momodu said. “From my analysis, Atiku Abubakar, even those who didn’t like him before, now see him differently because the enemy of your enemy is your friend.”
Momodu added that Atiku, who has contested the presidency multiple times since the 1990s, remains politically prepared for another attempt.
“He has prepared forever,” he said, comparing the situation to Donald Trump, whom he said pursued his political ambitions over a long period before returning to power.
He also cautioned against what he described as excessive praise for political leaders, urging Nigerians to speak frankly about governance and political developments.
“When tomorrow comes, Tinubu will remember that he had a friend in Dele Momodu who told him the truth when everybody was telling him lies,” he said.
