The Ondo State Police Command has clarified that no bandits were arrested at Akure Airport, contradicting an earlier statement by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
In a statement on Monday, the command spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, said there was no security breach at the airport and that reports of armed bandit arrests were inaccurate.
The confusion, he explained, stemmed from a tip-off about suspected kidnappers operating near the Eleyewo axis, several kilometres from the airport. Police launched an operation that led to the arrest of two individuals involved in kidnap logistics and support, not four bandits at the airport.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspects are Kidnap Logistics Suppliers aiding kidnap activities within the state. They have since made useful confessional statements that are currently aiding ongoing investigations and efforts to apprehend other members of the criminal network,” the statement said.
The command urged the public to disregard reports of bandit arrests at the airport, describing such claims as “false, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary panic.” Residents were reassured that security around critical infrastructure, including the airport, remains intact.
FAAN had earlier stated that four suspicious individuals were apprehended behind the airport perimeter near the Eleyewo community, praising the collaboration between aviation security personnel, Amotekun, community vigilantes, and other security agencies. The authority also dismissed a viral image claiming a violent incident at the airport as false.
The police emphasised that the arrested suspects are being investigated for kidnap-related activities in the state and warned that anyone involved in unlawful acts would face the full weight of the law. Residents were encouraged to provide credible information to support investigations.
FAAN added that the federal government, through the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, is accelerating the installation of modern perimeter fencing and enhanced security infrastructure at airports nationwide. The Ondo State Police reiterated its commitment to public safety, commending citizens for their vigilance and cooperation.
