The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said it has arrested a suspected vandal caught tampering with equipment at its 330kV switchyard in the Benin Sub-Region.
The company said the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Wisdom Amaunam of Erediauwa Community, was arrested at about 10am on Thursday, October 22, 2026, by a security officer on patrol. The officer reportedly caught him removing cables and wires from a marshalling kiosk in the switchyard.
The company said he has been handed over to the Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) Unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for investigation. He remains in custody pending the conclusion of investigations and possible arraignment.
The TCN commended its security personnel and the NSCDC for their vigilance and collaboration in protecting critical power infrastructure.
The company reiterated its zero tolerance for vandalism, trespassing and sabotage. It urged host communities and the general public to report suspicious activities around transmission installations promptly to security agencies or the nearest TCN office.
Vandalism of power infrastructure remains a concern for the sector, as damage to transmission assets can disrupt electricity supply.
