The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video of an alleged assault on its officers in Iffe, Ijumu local government area.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said preliminary findings indicate that on March 8, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m., one Medaiyese Boye of Iffe community reported at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ekinrin-Adde in a visibly battered and bloodied state, alleging he was attacked by some individuals.

The victim further claimed that the same group was simultaneously assaulting his father at the time he made the report.

Following the complaint, a police patrol team led by the divisional police officer swiftly mobilised to the scene. However, upon arrival, the officers reportedly met a hostile crowd that began pelting them with stones and their patrol vehicle in an apparent attempt to mob the team and possibly seize their weapons.

The command in a statement yesterday condemned the attack on officers on lawful duties, describing it as a serious offence and vowed that all those involved would be identified and brought to justice.

“In the process of safely withdrawing and dispersing the violent crowd, the patrol team deployed tear gas. The officers, however, rescued the victim,” the statement said.

The police also acknowledged a separate narrative and image circulating online depicting an injured woman, noting that the circumstances surrounding her condition could not be immediately verified due to the chaotic nature of the incident.

Meanwhile, the commissioner of police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

The probe, to be handled by the deputy commissioner of police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), will seek to establish the full facts of the incident.
