The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has warned that taxpayers who fail to file their annual tax returns before the March 31, 2026 deadline will face penalties in line with existing tax laws.
In a statement issued by its executive chairman, John Osirenimhe Odior, on Sunday the agency stressed that compliance with annual tax filing is mandatory for all eligible individuals and business operators in the state.
According to the agency, the obligation covers employees, entrepreneurs, professionals, and operators in the informal sector, including online traders and artisans, noting that failure to comply constitutes a breach of statutory requirements.
The statement cited relevant provisions of the law, including Section 24(f) of the 1999 Constitution and Section 13 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, warning that refusal to file or submission of incomplete or false information would attract administrative sanctions.
The revenue service further disclosed that tax returns are to be filed electronically, with taxpayers required to provide details of income, tax computations, and supporting documents, including evidence of payment and taxpayer identification.
It added that strict enforcement measures would be applied against defaulters, reiterating that timely tax compliance remains essential to avoid penalties and legal consequences.
