Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has reiterated his commitment to continued support for farmers to achieve meaningful and sustainable agricultural development in the state.
The governor made these remarks in his Sallah message shortly after receiving the Emir of Dutse, His Royal Highness Alhaji Haneem Muhammad Sanusi, who paid him a royal homage at Government House, Dutse. The event was marked by a durbar at Sir Muhammad Nuhu Sanusi Durbar Ground.
He noted that any development plan that does not place adequate emphasis on the agricultural sector would remain futile in Jigawa State, as over 70 per cent of the population are farmers.
Governor Namadi added that since assuming office, his administration has declared the agricultural sector the mainstay of the state’s economic development, and the effort has so far positioned the state as a key player in Nigeria’s food security.
According to him, the transformation taking place in the state’s agricultural sector has created millions of jobs, enabled a more conducive environment for the establishment of agro-allied industries, and attracted many investments to the state.
“Our agricultural mechanisation policy is also accelerating the transformation programme, and we will soon unveil another round of farm implements that will be a game changer, not only in Jigawa but also as a reference point in Nigeria’s agricultural development policy.”
“Our investment in agriculture has no limits. I assure Jigawa State farmers that we will continue to support them and work with them to build sustainable agriculture and economic development.”
“Agriculture is an area in which Jigawa State has a comparative advantage, and we remain resolute in implementing our agenda for the sector as enshrined in our 12-point agenda.”
“The agricultural development agenda is all-inclusive, from crops to livestock, poultry and land development. It will continue to be our top priority,” Governor Namadi stated.
Speaking on the challenges facing farmers, the governor acknowledged that many have experienced losses in recent times. Still, he assured that both the federal and Jigawa state governments are fully aware of the situation and are working to provide the necessary support.
He said, “Agriculture is the main investment for the people of Jigawa State. We are aware of the state of farming in this country; people farm but suffer losses and do not make profits. However, I want to assure our people that this is a temporary situation. As a government, we are considering measures to ensure that farmers can profit from their work.”
He explained that plans are already in place to assist farmers ahead of the upcoming dry-season farming, helping them return to their farms with confidence and improve their productivity.
“Starting from the farming season this year, God willing, we will introduce plans to assist poor farmers. Therefore, we encourage patience as we enter the farming season. If God wills, we will assist to support farmers.”
“One thing is certain: if we refuse to farm, there will be no food. If there is a shortage of food, then food prices will rise, and if food prices rise, we will suffer.”
“We know what makes farmers struggle: the cost of fertilisers and other factors. God willing, we will bring relief so that the poor can effectively engage in farming.”
On the recent increase in petroleum prices, Governor Namadi noted that the federal government has begun taking steps to ease the impact on citizens, including efforts to reduce transportation costs through alternative measures.
“The President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has instructed me to use this opportunity to inform our people that there has been an increase in fuel prices due to the crisis in the Middle East. This increase in fuel prices will place a burden on our community. However, the President has stated that the government will take steps to alleviate this burden,” he said.
He added that the state government will continue to complement these efforts, particularly by supporting farmers and ensuring that the effects do not weigh too heavily on the people.
The governor also used the occasion to encourage citizens to participate in the ongoing voter registration exercise, emphasising that the voter card remains a vital tool for democratic participation.
“And we call on everyone to go out and register to vote. Those who have not registered should do so. Those with damaged cards should replace them. Those who have changed their residence should update their information.”
“This voter card is your power. Today, if you have a voter card and Umar Namadi is not treating you right, you can confront him at the ballot box. Any elected official among us who is not doing right by you, use this card to replace him.”
Commenting on the Sallah homage paid by the emir, Governor Namadi described the visit as symbolic, reflecting deep cultural heritage, norms, and values rooted in society for generations.
He maintained that traditional and political leaders share a common goal—serving society—and that with cordial relations between the two institutions, society will be better, with opportunities, peace, unity and prosperity.
“This traditional visit is very encouraging, and I am highly appreciative. It provides an opportunity to acknowledge our shared efforts in promoting peace, development and cooperation across the state.”
Governor Namadi said he was encouraged by the goodwill message presented by the traditional institutions, particularly their recognition of the development projects and other transformations being carried out across the state by his government.
He assured the traditional leaders that his government will continue to pursue and implement policies, projects and programmes that will transform the lives of the people of Jigawa State and make the state stand tall among others in the areas of peace and prosperity.
He also appreciated the people of Jigawa State for their continued support for both the state and federal governments, noting that such cooperation is crucial to sustaining progress.
