Airtel Advances Satellite Connectivity With Starlink Trial

Airtel Africa has announced the successful testing of data and messaging services using Starlink Mobile technology in Kenya, marking a significant step towards expanding satellite-to-mobile connectivity across its footprint.

The trial, conducted in partnership with SpaceX, was carried out in areas without terrestrial network coverage, demonstrating the ability of satellite technology to bridge connectivity gaps in remote locations.

During the exercise, users with 4G-enabled smartphones connected seamlessly to Starlink’s network of over 650 satellites, enabling access to essential digital services despite the absence of conventional mobile signals.

The company said the test supported light data applications, including WhatsApp calls and messaging, navigation services, Facebook Messenger, and financial transactions through the Airtel app.

Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa, Sunil Taldar, described the development as a major milestone in the company’s connectivity drive.

“We are thrilled to move from announcement to actionable steps with our partners at SpaceX. This testing phase in Kenya is a testament to our commitment to expanding global access,” he said.

He added, “By integrating Starlink Mobile’s technology, we are ensuring that our customers remain connected even when they travel beyond our terrestrial network.”

Airtel Africa said insights from the Kenya trial would guide the planned rollout of the service across its 14 operating markets, subject to regulatory approvals in each country.

The company also disclosed plans to introduce voice services and enhanced data capabilities through the next-generation Starlink Mobile V2 technology, which is expected to deliver broadband connectivity directly to mobile devices.

Meanwhile, the initiative underscores growing efforts by telecom operators to leverage satellite technology in addressing connectivity challenges, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach communities across Africa.
