The arraignment of four people before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court has brought to light growing concerns over environmental sanitation violations and the persistent trade in stolen goods, with the authorities urging residents to avoid such unlawful acts.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) named the four accused persons as Fausat Babalola (48), Mustapha Basiriyu (29), Jinadu Abubakar (18), and Kolawole Deborah (30), They were docked over the alleged unlawful disposal of waste.

According to the prosecutor, ASP Akinwale Oriyomi, the defendants allegedly dumped refuse indiscriminately in a manner harmful to the environment and public health.

They pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of N50,000 each, with one surety. The case was adjourned until April 28.

Beyond the courtroom, the case underscores the dangers of improper waste disposal, a practice that continues to plague many communities. Indiscriminate dumping of refuse blocks drainage systems, leading to flooding, especially during the rainy season. It also creates breeding grounds for disease-carrying vectors such as mosquitoes and rodents, increasing the risk of malaria, cholera, and other infections.

Environmental experts warn that sustained neglect of proper waste management could result in long-term public health crises and environmental degradation. Residents are therefore advised to make use of designated waste disposal systems and comply with sanitation laws to safeguard both personal and community health.
