The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) on Thursday assured residents of a free, fair and credible local government and councillorship election scheduled for December 29, 2026.

OYSIEC Chairman, Babatunde Adeniyi, gave the assurance when executives of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, led by its Chairman, Yinka Adeniran, paid him a courtesy visit in Ibadan, the state capital.

He said the commission would strictly adhere to electoral laws and guidelines to ensure an outcome acceptable to political parties and citizens of the state.

“All the processes leading to the election are in top gear. We will comply with all relevant laws and conduct a credible election that will be acceptable to all,” Adeniyi said.

He solicited the cooperation of the media and political parties to enable the commission deliver on its mandate and address voter apathy, which has often characterised local government elections in the state.

Adeniyi commended the media for its consistent support even before his appointment, promising to sustain the relationship.

“This visit will not be taken for granted. Media practitioners have served as a bridge between leaders and the people. You have assisted us with balanced reportage, and we are grateful for your support,” he said.

“The electoral process has commenced, and there is no way we can deliver a transparent and credible election without the support of the media,” he added.

Also speaking, OYSIEC Commissioner, Remi Ayoade, urged political parties in the state to participate actively in the forthcoming local government and councillorship elections.

Earlier, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Adeniran, described Adeniyi as a seasoned unionist who has consistently advocated for the welfare of the downtrodden.

“We believe in your capacity to deliver a credible and fair election and deepen grassroots democracy for the benefit of the state,” Adeniran said.
