PDP Crisis: Saraki Insists Party Still Strong Despite Rift

Former Kwara State Governor and ex-Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has maintained that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains a strong force despite its lingering internal crisis.

Saraki who stated this when he appeared as a guest on Channels Television programme ‘Politics Today,’ insisted that the party is still widely accepted across the country.

Speaking amid concerns over divisions within the opposition party, Saraki said the PDP had weathered intense pressures and remained united longer than many expected, crediting reconciliation efforts for holding the structure together before disagreements escalated.

However, Saraki admitted that mistakes were made, particularly regarding the controversial convention in Ibadan, which he had advised against.

He noted that his recommendation for a caretaker committee was ignored, a decision he said contributed significantly to the current crisis.

“I made it clear that we should not go to Ibadan. It was not in the best interest of the party. If that advice had been taken, we would not be where we are today,” he said.

Speaking further, he dismissed claims that the party was collapsing, saying that its grassroots strength tells a different story.

“When you go round the states and speak to people at the grassroots, you will find that the PDP is still very strong. It remains a household name and is still sellable across the country.”

Speaking on the speculations about his political future, Saraki ruled out contesting any office in the 2027 general elections, noting that his position aligns with the principle of zoning.

“I am not running for any election in 2027. I believe it is only fair to allow the South to complete its eight-year presidential term,” he stated.

He also dismissed rumours linking him to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or suggesting he was working for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu behind the scenes, reiterating that his priority, alongside other stakeholders, is to ensure the PDP remains on the ballot and provides a credible platform for Nigerians seeking to contest elections.
