In a continent where financial systems were once defined by long queues, manual processes, and heavy reliance on cash, Mitchell Elegbe stands out as one of the transformative figures who reimagined how money moves. As the founder and Group Managing Director of Interswitch Group, Elegbe has played a central role in building the infrastructure that powers modern digital payments across Nigeria and increasingly, Africa. His story is not just about business success, but about foresight, resilience, and a deep commitment to solving real problems.
Born in Benin City, Edo State, Elegbe’s early life was shaped by modest circumstances and personal loss. He never met his father, who died before he was born, and was raised by his mother and later an uncle who became a strong influence in his life. These early experiences instilled in him discipline, independence, and a strong sense of responsibility—qualities that would later define both his personal and professional journey.
Elegbe studied Electrical/Electronic Engineering at the University of Benin, where his entrepreneurial instincts began to emerge. As a student, he engaged in small-scale ventures, including recording and selling cassette tapes and trading clothing. These activities were not merely a means of survival; they became his first lessons in business, teaching him about risk, customer needs, and value creation.
After completing his studies and the National Youth Service Corps, Elegbe began his career at Computer Systems Associates (CSA). There, he worked on integrating Nigerian banks into the global SWIFT network, gaining critical exposure to financial systems and technology infrastructure. This experience proved pivotal, sparking his interest in the intersection of finance and technology. He later moved to Telnet, a telecommunications company, where he rose to become Group Head of Business Development.
It was during his time at Telnet that the idea for Interswitch took shape. At the time, Nigeria’s banking system was largely inefficient and cash-driven, with limited interoperability between banks. Elegbe recognised an opportunity to build a system that could connect financial institutions and enable seamless electronic transactions. In 2002, with backing from Accenture and a consortium of Nigerian banks, he founded Interswitch.
The early years were challenging. Convincing banks, regulators, and customers to embrace electronic payments in a deeply cash-oriented economy required persistence and strategic thinking. However, Elegbe remained committed to his vision of a unified payment infrastructure. Over time, that vision began to materialise.
Under his leadership, Interswitch evolved into a major player in Africa’s fintech space. Its platforms now support a large share of Nigeria’s electronic transactions, linking banks, government institutions, and millions of users. Products such as Quickteller, Verve, and Paydirect have become widely used, offering convenient and secure payment solutions that have transformed everyday financial interactions.
Elegbe’s ambition has always extended beyond Nigeria. Through acquisitions and partnerships, Interswitch expanded into other African markets, including East Africa. Strategic moves such as acquiring stakes in Uganda’s Bankom and Kenya’s Paynet Group strengthened the company’s regional footprint. They reinforced its role as a leading provider of integrated payment solutions across the continent.
Beyond building a successful business, Elegbe has shown a strong commitment to social impact and talent development. He actively mentors young entrepreneurs and supports initiatives that promote education and innovation. One notable example is the SPAK National Science Competition, launched by Interswitch to encourage interest in STEM among Nigerian students. His involvement in platforms like Endeavour Nigeria also reflects his dedication to nurturing the next generation of African business leaders.
His contributions have earned him significant recognition. Elegbe has received the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award and was inducted into the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year Hall of Fame in 2023. He was named African Banker Icon in 2019 and has been honoured by global institutions for advancing inclusive financial systems. More recently, he received the Silverbird Special Achievement Award in 2026, further underscoring his impact.
Despite these accolades, Elegbe is widely regarded as a humble and people-focused leader. He places a strong emphasis on trust, collaboration, and long-term value creation. Within Interswitch, he has fostered a culture of innovation and shared ownership, enabling the company to remain agile in a fast-changing industry.
On the personal front, Elegbe is a devoted family man, married to his university sweetheart, Mercy, with whom he has four children. He often speaks about the importance of balancing professional ambition with family life and the need for continuous self-improvement.
Looking ahead, Elegbe remains focused on expanding digital infrastructure and deepening financial inclusion across Africa. He envisions a future where technology bridges economic divides and empowers individuals and businesses alike. His belief in Africa’s potential continues to drive his work.
Mitchell Elegbe’s journey is ultimately a story of vision translated into impact. Through Interswitch, he has helped build the backbone of Africa’s digital payments ecosystem, paving the way for a more connected and financially inclusive future.
