The National Sports Commission (NSC) has hailed the appointment of Samson Adamu as Acting Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football, describing it as a landmark moment for Nigerian sports administration.

The decision, ratified on Sunday at the Giza Palace Hotel, marks the first time in more than 70 years that a Nigerian has occupied the influential position at the heart of African football governance.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko said the appointment underlines Nigeria’s growing stature in global sports leadership.

“This is a proud moment not only for Samson Adamu but for the entire country. His track record within CAF speaks for itself, and we are confident he will bring excellence, integrity and progressive leadership to the role,” Dikko said. “Nigerians stand firmly behind him and trust he will represent both the nation and the continent with distinction.”

Director General Bukola Olopade also welcomed the development, describing it as both timely and richly deserved.

“Samson Adamu has consistently demonstrated professionalism, capacity and a deep understanding of football administration at the highest level. His appointment reflects his competence and dedication, and we believe he will build on existing achievements while strengthening CAF’s administrative framework,” Olopade stated.

Adamu, the son of former sports administrator Amos Adamu, steps into the role following the resignation of Veron Mosengo-Omba.

He brings extensive experience to the position, having previously served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he earned widespread recognition for overseeing major continental competitions with efficiency and innovation.

The Commission expressed confidence in his ability to succeed and pledged the full backing of the Nigerian sporting community as he takes on the new challenge.
