The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has distributed 20,000 food packs to residents across the state in celebration of the 74th birthday of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The initiative was disclosed in a statement on Sunday by the governor’s special adviser on media and publicity, Gboyega Akosile, noting that the distribution took place at the De Blue Roof Event Centre and other locations across the state.
The exercise, which also featured a personalised open letter to residents, saw beneficiaries drawn from across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, with additional distribution at religious centres.
The event attracted government officials, community leaders and representatives of various groups, as residents turned out to receive the food packs amid ongoing economic challenges.
In the open letter read during the ceremony, Sanwo-Olu urged Lagosians to celebrate Tinubu, describing him as an “extraordinary leader.”
“My dear people, as you receive this gift box, know that its contents are more than a token of celebration. Therein is the united voice of Lagos State, saying resoundingly, we stand with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We stand with his Renewed Hope Agenda. We believe in the Nigeria he is building. Yes, we believe,” the letter read.
The governor acknowledged the hardship caused by ongoing economic reforms but expressed optimism about improving conditions.
“We have endured the pains of the reforms together, and now we are beginning to reap the rewards of our endurance. The worst is behind us, and the best is in sight,” he said.
He also called for sustained public support for the administration’s policies, warning against abandoning ongoing reforms.
“The transformation President Tinubu has begun must not be abandoned midstream. The seeds planted with such courage, boldness and foresight are only just beginning to bear fruits,” the letter added.
Sanwo-Olu further highlighted Tinubu’s legacy as a former Lagos governor, crediting him with laying the foundation for the state’s economic growth between 1999 and 2007.
“As your governor, I have had the privilege of building upon the legacy President Tinubu created as Governor of Lagos State. His visionary leadership transformed Lagos into the economic powerhouse it is today,” he said.
He added that the institutional and revenue framework established during Tinubu’s tenure continues to drive development in the state.
“The revenue architecture he pioneered, the institutions he built, and the spirit of excellence he nurtured are the very pillars upon which the Greater Lagos Rising Agenda stands,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
Speaking at the event, commissioner for information and strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, described the occasion as significant for both Lagos and the country.
“It is a special day for Nigeria, a special day for the Black race and a special day for us in Lagos because today is the birthday of our President,” he said.
Omotoso explained that the distribution was designed to ensure inclusiveness, allowing residents across the state to partake in the celebration.
“The idea is that all Lagosians should feel that today is the 74th birthday of Mr. President,” he added.
Also speaking, the special adviser on political, legislative and civic engagement, Tajudeen Afolabi, said the initiative underscored the administration’s commitment to residents’ welfare.
“This is the gift of Renewed Hope for Lagosians and residents of Lagos State,” he said.
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the state government, describing the gesture as timely in the face of current economic realities.
The event also featured prayers for Nigeria and for the continued leadership of the President.
