Govenrors of the 19 northern states, under the auspices of Northern States Governors’ Forum(NSGF), have resolved to continue to support the President Bola Tinubu-led federal government in effectively countering evolving security threats.
The forum said it is dedicated to ensuring that lasting peace and security are firmly established throughout the region and the entire country.
These resolutions were contained in a communique issued at the end of
NSGF’s meeting held at the Gombe State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja on Monday.
The forum also appealed to all Nigerians to support the President, armed forces and other security agencies, in the critical national assignment of securing Nigeria.
It acknowledged and commends the unified efforts of member states in addressing the numerous security and developmental challenges facing the region, noting that these efforts are already producing positive outcomes.
The forum also reaffirmed its resolute commitment to maintaining and enhancing these collaborative actions in order to build upon the progress achieved.
“The Forum applauds the ongoing efforts towards institutional strengthening and restructuring and reaffirmed its readiness to ensure that the NSGF is put on a solid foundation, one that enhances coordination, ensures continuity, and improves the capacity of Northern States for strategic engagement and policy implementation.
“To this end, the Forum further resolved to fully support digitisation initiatives of its Secretariat, headed by the Director-General.
“To determine and appropriately tap from the region’s taxable revenue, the Forum agreed to engage relevant consultants to work out modalities, using all available opportunities for the consideration of the Forum.
“The forum resolved to continue its engagement with the Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer on the establishment of New Nigeria Energy Company (NNEC) to facilitate the implementation of the Sun Africa Project,” the communique reads further.
In his opening remarks at the meeting, the chairman of NSGF and governor of Gombe state, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, said through their collective efforts and the support of the federal government, the security situation across parts of Northern Nigeria has shown measurable improvement.
Yahaya, however, said there was absolutely no room for complacency as the northern govenrors must sustain and intensify their collective efforts to consolidate on the gains recorded by neutralizing emerging threats and ensuring that peace and security take firm and lasting root across our region.
He recalled that the forum at its last meeting in December, took far-reaching decisions, particularly the resolution to establish the Northern States Security Trust Fund, with a firm commitment by each state to contribute one billion naira monthly to the Fund.
The governor said the initiative represents a bold and practical step towards strengthening north regional security architecture through sustainable funding and collaborative engagement.
He disclosed that some states, including Nasarawa, Gombe, Borno, Kebbi and Kaduna have already begun fulfilling this commitment and urged others to follow suit promptly while commending those who started
the payment.
“We equally commit to paying 500 million naira each (100 million naira monthly from December 2025 to April 2026) towards building a befitting secretariat for the NSGF. So far, only Gombe, Nasarawa, Borno, Plateau, Zamfara, Sokoto and Kaduna States have begun making payments. It is my hope that other states will expedite actions towards fulfilling this commitment,”Yahaya said.
He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and support towards the creation of state police which the NSGF is as at the forefront of the growing national conversation around the reform.
Yahaya said in confronting the security challenges, the northern govenrors must not lose sight of their underlying causes, noting that insecurity in the region is deeply intertwined with issues of illiteracy, poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment.
“If we are to achieve lasting peace, we must invest deliberately and massively in education, human capital development, and economic opportunities for our people.
“The challenge of out-of-school children, in particular, remains a critical concern that requires urgent, continuous and coordinated action,” he said.
The NSGF chairman said as they approach the rainy season, the govenrors must also proactively address the recurring issue of farmer-herder conflicts, which has historically posed significant threats to peace and agricultural productivity in our region.
“It is essential that we work closely with the Federal Government, security agencies, and community leaders to develop sustainable, proactive and lasting solutions. In this regard, we lend our support to Mr. President’s livestock transformation initiatives, which provide a viable pathway for resolving these conflicts in a structured and modern manner.
“Let me, at this point, commend your excellencies for your continued cooperation, solidarity, and commitment to the ideals of this Forum. The unity we have demonstrated remains our greatest strength, and it is through this unity that we can effectively confront our shared challenges and secure a better future for our people.
“I would like to once again commend His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his leadership, courage, and firm commitment to the security and stability of our nation. The task of rebuilding and repositioning Nigeria is no doubt enormous, and it requires the collective support of all Nigerians.
“On a final note, I call on the people of Northern Nigeria to continue to support the President in this critical national assignment. Together, through patience, resilience, and collective effort, we shall overcome our challenges and build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Nigeria.
“As we commence our deliberations today, I urge us all to engage with sincerity, openness, and a strong sense of purpose. The expectations of our people are high, and rightly so. History beckons on us to rise above all differences and act decisively in the interest of our region and our country,” he added.
