A fire has gutted a mechanic workshop in the Isheri-Idimu area of Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, damaging 21 vehicles and a section of a nearby building.
The fire broke out at about 3:05am on Thursday along Oladunni Street, beside Eternal Filling Station, raising fears that the inferno could spread to the adjoining petrol station and trigger a major disaster.
However, the swift intervention of emergency responders prevented the fire from spreading to the filling station and surrounding buildings.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) disclosed this in a statement by its Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the agency’s Dolphin Response Team, stationed at Igando, was immediately activated following a distress call.
He said responders discovered on arrival that the fire had engulfed a mechanical workshop where several exotic vehicles were parked close to a petroleum filling station.
According to him, the coordinated intervention of LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigeria Police Force prevented the fire from spreading to the filling station and nearby structures.
“The fire has been completely extinguished, and damping-down operations concluded. Preliminary assessment indicates that about twenty-one (21) exotic vehicles were affected, with a section of a nearby building sustaining minor damage,” he said.
The permanent secretary added that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded in the incident.
He commended the emergency responders for their swift action, which he said helped bring the situation under control and avert a possible disaster.
Oke-Osanyintolu urged residents to prioritise safety measures, particularly in workshops and other environments where inflammable materials are handled.
He also advised members of the public to promptly alert emergency services by calling the toll-free numbers 767 and 112 in the event of an emergency.
