The African Union Sports Council Region 2, in collaboration with the National Sports Commission, has convened a key workshop in Abuja to drive the implementation of the African Union’s sports development policy.

The workshop, held at BON Hotels, has brought together sports directors from across West Africa to deliberate on strategies to advance the continent’s framework for sustainable sports development.

Speaking at the event, Dr Angela Martins, Acting Director for Social Development, Culture and Sports at the African Union, stressed the importance of member states meeting their financial obligations to the Union.

“Our finance structures remain in constant engagement with member states to ensure they are in good standing and avoid sanctions,” she said.

Martins also reaffirmed the AU’s commitment to talent development through participation in major competitions such as the African Games, noting that such platforms are crucial for preparing athletes for global events.

She further highlighted the importance of preserving Africa’s cultural heritage through sport, advocating for the integration of traditional games into school systems across the continent.

“Through this policy and ongoing engagements, we hope member states will find ways to incorporate traditional games into education and promote them globally,” she added.
