The President of the National Youth Alliance (NYA), Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas, has called on Nigerian youths to take urgent and decisive action to safeguard the country’s democracy amid growing national challenges.
Abbas made the call on Sunday at the NYA seminar themed “Birthing a New Nigeria,” held alongside the inauguration of 112 Local Government Coordinators for the North-East Zone at the Double Four Event Centre in Bauchi.
In his welcome address, he urged young Nigerians to remain disciplined, principled, and committed to national service, stressing that the responsibility of preserving democracy rests heavily on their shoulders.
“It is time for young people to rise, stay focused, and take responsibility for protecting our democracy,” he said.
He acknowledged the difficulties ahead but insisted that courage and determination would be essential in navigating the task of nation-building.
“This will not be easy, but we must commit our time and energy to building a better Nigeria,” Abbas added.
The NYA president warned that Nigeria is at a critical point, describing the nation as “bleeding” and in urgent need of rescue.
“Nigeria is at a critical juncture, struggling and in dire need of intervention. We must rise to steer the country back on the path of progress,” he stated.
Abbas also reminded youths of the sacrifices made by past leaders, urging them to uphold and strengthen the nation’s democratic values.
“We must not forget those who gave their all for Nigeria. It is now our duty to defend and advance the democracy they built,” he said.
In his remarks, guest speaker Senator Adamu Ibrahim Gumba commended the NYA for its patriotic vision and expressed confidence in its capacity to contribute to national transformation.
“Your vision is inspiring. You are committed to building a Nigeria that earns global respect. That is a noble pursuit,” he said.
Gumba urged members of the alliance to actively participate in politics, emphasizing that meaningful change can only be achieved through engagement in the political process.
“You must not remain on the sidelines. Unite under a political platform and use your collective strength to influence leadership and governance,” he advised.
He added that strategic unity among youths could open doors to leadership opportunities and enhance their role in national development.
Drawing comparisons with countries like Senegal, where young leaders have risen to positions of power, the senator encouraged Nigerian youths to aspire to similar feats.
Also speaking, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Hajara Yakubu Wanka, who served as Mother of the Day, expressed optimism about the role of youths in repositioning Nigeria.
“With unity, focus, and commitment, Nigerian youths can place the country on the right path. I commend this vision and identify with the movement,” she said.
The event marked a significant step in NYA’s ongoing efforts to mobilise and empower young Nigerians toward building a more inclusive, progressive, and democratic society.
