Ekwueme Varsity Unveils Future Skills Institute, Targets AI, Fintech Growth

In line with its strategic priority on digital transformation, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI) has announced the launch of the Institute for Future Skills and Innovation (IFSI), an interdisciplinary academic and innovation hub designed to prepare students and professionals for emerging sectors of the global digital economy.

The new institute, according to its executive director, Prof. Chinedu Ekuma, was developed in partnership with the African Skills and Innovation Network (ASIN) to deliver programmes in artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital business, entrepreneurship, and agritech through a technology-enabled learning model.

A statement released by the institution in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State and made available to LEADERSHIP, ecplained that the launch reflected AE-FUNAI’s broader commitment to technology-enabled education, innovative programme development, and the preparation of graduates for a rapidly evolving world of work.

It added that the university’s strategic plan identifies digital transformation as a major institutional priority and positions technology as a key enabler of academic excellence, research, administration, and student learning.

Ekuma explained that the institute is designed to integrate academic programmes, applied research, and professional training to equip learners with the knowledge, practical skills, and an innovative mindset required in a rapidly evolving, innovation-driven world.

He further noted that IFSI will operate a modern digital-first learning model supported by an advanced Learning Management System and global faculty collaboration, enabling students to engage with instructors, researchers, and industry experts from across Nigeria and around the world.

On his part, the Vice-Chancellor of AE-FUNAI, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, said the establishment of the institute underscores the university’s commitment to preparing students for the realities of the modern global economy.

“The world of work is changing at an unprecedented pace, and universities must evolve to prepare graduates for new industries driven by digital technologies and innovation,” Nwachukwu said.

“The Institute for Future Skills and Innovation positions AE-FUNAI to equip students with the skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial mindset required to lead in the digital economy.”

He added that the launch aligns with the university’s broader vision of becoming an excellent centre of learning, research, and innovation, as well as building an ecosystem of researchers, entrepreneurs, and technology leaders.

The initiative comes at a time when demand for advanced digital and interdisciplinary skills is rising in Nigeria, amid the rapid growth of sectors such as fintech, artificial intelligence, digital services, and innovation-driven entrepreneurship.

Industry employers, however, continue to report a shortage of professionals with the technical, entrepreneurial, and interdisciplinary capabilities required to sustain this transformation.

By combining future-focused academic programmes with applied innovation, AE-FUNAI said the institute will help bridge the skills gap and strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to compete in the global knowledge economy.

Nwachukwu added, “Our goal is simple but transformative. We want AE-FUNAI graduates to be innovators, technology leaders, and entrepreneurs capable of shaping the future, not just in Nigeria, but globally. Through this institute, AE-FUNAI is creating a platform where innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship converge to shape the future of higher education in Africa.”
