PSG Overwhelms Liverpool In Champions League Quarterfinal First Leg

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured a commanding 2-0 victory over Liverpool in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.

The reigning champions showcased their dominance, with the scoreline reflecting a performance that could have been even more decisive.

Désiré Doué and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia each found the net, but PSG were denied two strong penalty appeals and squandered several opportunities that could have made the return leg next week a mere formality.

Liverpool, on the other hand, will return to Anfield with a glimmer of hope, albeit knowing they must drastically improve after failing to register a single shot on target throughout the match.

In response to a disappointing 4-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, manager Arne Slot made the bold decision to bench Mohamed Salah and adopt an unfamiliar three-centre-back formation. Despite this cautious approach, Liverpool were fortunate that Ousmane Dembélé’s finishing let him down, alongside critical saves from goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Doué opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a deflected shot that looped over Mamardashvili—who was standing in for the injured Alisson Becker—and nestled under the crossbar. Mamardashvili later made an impressive close-range save from Doué just before half-time, after the forward was set up by Dembélé.

PSG continued to threaten, with Dembélé failing to convert a golden opportunity from inside the area, before missing another clear chance shortly after the break, shooting over from close range following a cutback from Nuno Mendes.

Kvaratskhelia then added to PSG’s tally midway through the second half, cutting in from the left flank and displaying his nimble footwork to evade a defender and the goalkeeper, before slotting in his team-leading seventh goal of the tournament.

Liverpool’s woes seemed set to deepen when José María Sánchez awarded a penalty for a challenge by Ibrahima Konaté on Warren Zaïre-Emery. However, the referee was directed to the pitchside monitor by VAR and subsequently overturned the decision.
