Preparations for the 2026 National Schools Football Championship have gathered significant momentum, with a sharp rise in registrations marking a key milestone ahead of the nationwide tournament.
The competition, endorsed by the Nigeria Football Federation and the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, is designed to provide a structured platform for school-aged athletes to showcase their talents while strengthening the development pipeline for Nigeria’s Under-15 and Under-17 national teams.
The championship is scheduled to commence in May 2026, with matches to be staged across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Schools will first compete at the state level before advancing to regional qualifiers. Winners from the six geopolitical zones will later converge in Abuja for the grand finale in June 2026, featuring both boys’ and girls’ categories.
According to organisers, the growing number of registrations reflects increasing nationwide interest in structured school sports and talent development pathways.
Chief Executive Officer of the Kickstart Sports Foundation, Ibrahim Bello, described the initiative as a long-term investment in the future of Nigerian football, stressing that its objectives extend beyond talent identification to include systematic player development.
Bello noted that outstanding participants will benefit from advanced training programmes delivered by qualified coaches, as well as exposure to talent scouts from both domestic and international football academies and clubs.
He further emphasised the close collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Nigeria Football Federation, and noted that national team coaches will observe matches alongside international recruitment representatives throughout the tournament.
Bello also highlighted the championship’s strong governance framework, noting its strict adherence to age verification, safeguarding protocols and gender inclusion standards. Participation is restricted exclusively to school-based athletes, while the integration of biometric verification through the National Identity Management Commission is expected to strengthen transparency and eliminate age-related malpractice.
In addition, the initiative is expected to contribute to capacity development within the education and sports sectors. Physical Education teachers from participating schools will receive specialised training and the opportunity to obtain certified football coaching qualifications, thereby strengthening grassroots coaching capacity nationwide.
Organisers say the championship represents a significant step towards aligning school sports with national development objectives, while fostering a safer, more transparent and inclusive environment for young athletes to thrive.
