FIFA has reiterated its commitment to respecting the immigration policies of host nations following the Canadian government’s refusal of a visa for Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey.

The decision will see Partey miss Ghana’s opening World Cup fixture against Panama on June 17 in Canada.

The global football governing body confirmed Partey’s inability to travel from the team’s Boston base, stating, “FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas.” This firm stance underscores FIFA’s long-standing policy, as the statement continued, “As with previous FIFA events, the host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country.”

While acknowledging the player’s absence, FIFA’s communication emphasizes the organization’s role as a facilitator of the tournament, rather than an arbiter of national border control.

The incident highlights the complex interplay between international sporting events and the sovereign rights of host countries.
