It is almost always a walk in the park to be able to point to famous gospel artistes from other geopolitical zones in Nigeria than it is to do so from their counterparts in the North. Ironically, some of the pioneer voices in gospel music from Nigeria are northerners or were born here. The Northern and Middle Belt regions of Nigeria have birthed some of the most profound voices in modern gospel. Remember Panam Percy Paul? There are many more: Here is a look at five iconic ministers whose roots are firmly planted in these regions.
Dr. Panam Percy Paul (Adamawa State)
Widely considered the “Grandfather” of contemporary Northern gospel, Dr. Panam hails from Adamawa State. Since the late 70s, he has redefined worship with a unique country-highlife fusion. With over 14 albums and a legendary career spanning nearly five decades, his Bring Down the Glory series remains the gold standard for many young artists today.
Pastor Ishaya Chingtok (Kano/Kaduna State)
Born in Kano State and based in Zaria, Pastor Chingtok is a psalmist of great depth. He is the founder of God-Life Assembly and is revered for his Worship Expressions series. His music is often described as “pure worship,” devoid of fluff and focused entirely on the nature of the Divine.
David Dam (Plateau State)
A rising giant from Jos, Plateau State, David Dam is a minstrel whose voice is inseparable from the modern “Secret Place” worship movement. As a key music minister at Koinonia (ENI), his soulful delivery and scriptural lyrics have made him one of the most sought-after voices in Northern Nigeria today.
Jeremiah Gyang (Plateau State)
A true son of the soil from Jos, Plateau State, Jeremiah Gyang is a master instrumentalist and singer who brought a sophisticated Afro-folk sound to the mainstream. His 2005 breakthrough with “Na Ba Ka” proved that Hausa gospel could be both deeply spiritual and commercially successful on a national scale. Even though he claims not to be a gospel artiste, it is hard not to categorise him as one.
Kaestrings (Benue State)
Kingsley Innocent, popularly known as Kaestrings, is a viral sensation from the Idoma tribe of Benue State, though he was raised in Zaria, Kaduna. His song “Ga Shi Nan” became a global phenomenon after being featured in the Koinonia ministry sessions. He represents the new “fire-brand” generation that prioritises spontaneous, atmosphere-shifting worship.
Solomon Lange (Kaduna State)
Hailing from Wasa in Kaduna State, Solomon Lange is a household name across Nigeria. Known for his polished Hausa and English blends, he has been a consistent force since his 2008 debut. His anthem “Na Gode” (I Give Thanks) resonated far beyond the North, cementing his place as a premier worship leader and motivational speaker.
4.Chris Morgan (Benue State)
The “Ibe-m” crooner is a proud native of Benue State. Chris Morgan’s music is characterised by a raw, emotive power that often draws from his Idoma heritage. In ministry since 2005, he is often described as a “worship general” whose songs create an atmosphere of deep intimacy and prophetic weight
wie Abutu (Benue State)
Another powerhouse from the Idoma tribe in Benue State, Owie Abutu, was born and raised in Kaduna. He is best known for “Our Help,” a song that has become a staple in many Nigerian churches. His style is deeply rooted in the “Prophetic Chant,” aimed at leading congregations into a literal experience of God’s presence.
Benjamin Lange (Kaduna State)
Following in the footsteps of his mentor Solomon Lange, Benjamin is a talented songwriter and artist from Kaduna State. He has carved out his own space with songs like “Kuzo” (Come and See), focusing on testimonies of victory. He represents the continued legacy of Kaduna as a hub for nurturing gospel talent.
Buchi (Kaduna State
While many know him for his world-class reggae, few realise that Buchi Atuonwu was actually born and raised in Kaduna State. This Northern upbringing influenced his early years before his move to Lagos. A former university lecturer, Buchi transitioned to gospel reggae in the early 90s and has since become one of the most decorated reggae ministers in Africa.
