Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has expressed concern over the ongoing removal of railway sleepers along rail corridors in Alkaleri and Tafawa Balewa local government areas.
The governor raised the alarm yesterday after observing contractors allegedly dismantling the sleepers while on his way to Alkaleri on a condolence visit.
He subsequently directed his chief of staff, Aminu Hammayo, to write to the Federal Ministry of Transport, requesting clarification and conveying the state government’s concern over what he described as the dismantling of national assets without due consultation.
Although security personnel accompanying the workers reportedly claimed they were acting on federal directives, the governor said such explanations were inadequate to justify the removal of critical infrastructure.
Mohammed warned that dismantling the rail line could further marginalise key areas, noting that the infrastructure plays a vital role in addressing transportation challenges and facilitating the movement of agricultural produce.
He stressed the need for transparency and stronger collaboration between federal and state authorities, emphasising that decisions affecting critical infrastructure must take into account their economic impact on local communities and livelihoods.
