Team Nigeria has received a significant boost ahead of the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, with World Athletics confirming the eligibility of all six Nigerian relay teams for final entry. This marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s impressive athletic comeback on the global stage.
The confirmation, communicated by Carlo De Angeli, Head of Sport Services at World Athletics, allows for a maximum of six athletes per event, with a submission deadline of April 13th (midnight Monaco time).
The administrative clearance underscores the remarkable progress made by Nigerian athletics over the past 12 months, largely attributed to the transformative leadership of Tonobok Okowa, President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN). The AFN has lauded the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its unwavering support, with Director General Bukola Olopade playing a crucial role through comprehensive backing for the sport. Olopade’s commitment to funding, planning, and athlete-centric initiatives has significantly bolstered Nigeria’s preparation pipeline.
A key element in this resurgence has been the meticulously organised relay camp in Asaba. Here, athletes benefited from enhanced training conditions, expert technical guidance, and vital team bonding sessions, which have been instrumental in refining baton exchanges and building cohesion – historical challenges for Nigerian relay teams.
Nigeria’s qualification for the World Relays was also propelled by outstanding performances at international events, including the Lefika International Relays and the Orange Botswana National Championship, where Team Nigeria delivered impressive timings to secure their place among the world’s elite.
Since assuming office, President Okowa has overseen a period of renewed structure, improved athlete welfare, and strategic international exposure. These reforms are now yielding tangible results, with Nigeria not only increasing its qualification rate for major competitions but also restoring confidence among athletes and
stakeholders.
The World Relays in Gaborone present a prime opportunity for Nigeria to further solidify its resurgence. With a strong contingent of experienced stars and promising emerging talents, expectations are high for the team to not only participate but to contend strongly against the world’s best.
Beyond mere qualification, the broader narrative is Nigeria’s steady return to global relevance in athletics, driven by effective leadership, robust institutional backing, and deliberate high-performance planning. As the countdown to Gaborone begins, all eyes will be on Team Nigeria to translate this renewed momentum into podium success, cementing its status as a rising force in world athletics.
