The Oyo State Police Command has arrested Sodiq Kayode Akorede ‘M’, aged 23, for unlawfully killing a 6-year-old girl, later identified as Mutiyatu Sunday ‘F’, and severed her head, which was recovered from him.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ayanlade Olayinka, who confirmed the arrest on Sunday in Ibadan, said in line with the command’s efforts to ensure the safety of lives and property, as well as to ensure that justice is served at all times, he confirmed that the tragic incident occurred on April 11, 2026, in Adigun village, Olorunda Ogunsola area of Ibadan.
Olayinka said the Command received information that a young girl had been unlawfully killed, with her head severed and reportedly found in the possession of one Sodiq Kayode Akorede ‘M’ at the aforementioned location.
“Upon receipt of this information, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, Abimbola Olugbenga promptly directed that operatives be mobilized to the scene, the suspect be rescued, and the exhibit secured.
“Consequently, in compliance with this directive, police officers swiftly mobilized to the scene and, despite stiff resistance from an irate mob, acted with professionalism, restraint, and in accordance with the law to successfully rescue and arrest the suspect, as well as secure the exhibit found in his possession,” he said.
According to him, following the arrest, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly unlawfully killed a 6-year-old girl, later identified as Mutiyatu Sunday ‘F’, and severed her head, which was recovered from him.
Upon interrogation, he said the suspect confessed to the commission of the crime.
He was thereafter conveyed to a medical facility for necessary treatment following injuries sustained from the mob attack and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for discreet investigation and prosecution.
“In light of the foregoing, the Commissioner of Police strongly warns against acts of jungle justice, as such unlawful actions impede thorough investigation and ultimately truncate the course of justice,” he said.
The Command reassured members of the public that justice will be served in this matter and urges residents to remain law-abiding while promptly reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.
