The Delta State Police Command has uncovered a sophisticated cybercrime scheme involving a 17-year-old student who allegedly hacked into the WhatsApp accounts of prominent celebrities to solicit funds and distribute explicit materials.
The suspect, whose identity remains withheld due to his age, was also found to be operating a “syndicate” within his school, where he allegedly sold pornographic content to his classmates.
During an interactive session with popular comedian Otaghware Onodjayeke, also known as “I Go Save,” the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ugborikoko Division in Uvwie Local Government Area, Temi Agbede Zuokumor, disclosed that the teenager was apprehended during a routine check.
According to the DPO, the investigation took a suspicious turn when the suspect’s mother attempted to shield him by claiming the mobile device found in his possession belonged to his sister.
“The woman looked very modest, so I asked her if she was from Deeper Life. She said no. I then asked why her son took a phone to school, and she claimed it belonged to his sister,” Agbede Zuokumor stated.
Following inconsistent statements from the mother, the police audited the device. The search revealed that the phone was used exclusively by the teenager and contained over 80 foreign contacts, primarily from Australia.
The DPO further noted that the device was saturated with explicit materials. Analysis of the suspect’s chat logs revealed that his peers frequently referred to him as “boss” and placed orders for adult content.
“We saw several foreign numbers, over 80 Australian lines, and the phone was filled with pornographic content. We also saw chats with his classmates asking if he had explicit content to sell. They were calling him ‘boss’ in school,” the DPO added.
Beyond distributing illicit content, the suspect allegedly used his technical skills to hijack celebrities’ WhatsApp accounts. He reportedly used these high-profile accounts to defraud unsuspecting members of the public by demanding money under various pretences.
Investigations are ongoing to identify other members of the ring and the full extent of the fraudulent activities carried out through the compromised accounts.
