SEMA Confirms Civilian Casualties In Yobe Market Airstrike

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed that civilians were affected in an accidental airstrike at Jilli Saturday Market in Gubio Local Government Area.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening in the border community near Geidam LGA, reportedly involved traders, many of whom were said to have come from Geidam.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the agency said it had received preliminary reports of casualties linked to the strike and had since activated its response mechanisms on the directive of Governor Mai Mala Buni.

“The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency wishes to inform the general public that it has received preliminary reports of an incident on Saturday evening at Jilli Saturday Market in Gubio Local Government Area bordering Geidam, which reportedly resulted in casualties affecting some traders from Geidam LGA, Yobe State,” the statement read.

SEMA said it is working in coordination with security agencies and health authorities to manage the situation and support victims.

“In response, SEMA, as directed by Governor Mai Mala Buni, in collaboration with relevant security agencies and health authorities, has immediately activated emergency response mechanisms and deployed assessment teams to the affected area to ascertain the facts and provide necessary support to victims,” the agency added.

While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, earlier reports indicated significant loss of life. Local sources suggested that at least 30 people may have died, while Reuters put the figure as high as 200.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed carrying out precision airstrikes in the Jilli axis under Operation Hadin Kai but has yet to publicly address reports of civilian casualties.

SEMA, however, cautioned against the spread of unverified information, particularly concerning casualty figures.

“The agency therefore urges members of the public to remain calm and to refrain from sharing unconfirmed information, particularly speculative figures,” it stated.

The agency assured residents that efforts are ongoing to establish the full details of the incident and provide necessary humanitarian assistance.

“SEMA assures the people of Yobe State that the situation is being closely monitored, and every effort is being made to establish the facts and ensure that appropriate humanitarian assistance is provided promptly,” the statement noted.

It also expressed sympathy with affected families and the wider community.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the affected families and the entire community at this difficult time,” SEMA said, adding that further updates would be provided as more verified information emerges.
