Team Nigeria’s impressive resurgence on the global athletics stage has received a significant boost with World Athletics confirming the country’s eligibility for final entry in all six relay events at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.
A communication from Carlo De Angeli, Head of Sport Services, cleared participating nations for final entries, reminding them of the maximum six athletes per event and an April 13th (midnight Monaco time) submission deadline.
A key factor in this resurgence is the well-organised relay camp in Asaba, which provided enhanced training, technical guidance, and team bonding – vital for improving baton exchanges and cohesion, areas that have historically challenged Nigeria’s relay teams.
Nigeria’s qualification for the World Relays was also secured through outstanding performances at events like the Lefika International Relays and the Orange Botswana National Championship, where Team Nigeria delivered impressive times.
Since taking office, Okowa has overseen structural improvements, enhanced athlete welfare, and strategic international exposure. These reforms are now yielding results, with Nigeria not only increasing its qualification rate for major competitions but also rebuilding confidence among athletes and stakeholders.
The World Relays in Gaborone offer another chance for Nigeria to showcase its renewed strength. With a mix of seasoned stars and promising new talent, there are high expectations that the team will not just compete, but genuinely contend against the world’s best.
Beyond qualifications, the broader story is Nigeria’s consistent return to global prominence in athletics, driven by effective leadership, robust institutional support, and meticulous high-performance planning. As the countdown to Gaborone begins, all eyes will be on Team Nigeria to translate this momentum into podium success, cementing its status as a rising force in world athletics.
