Residents of Woro community in Kaiama local government area of Kwara State have expressed anger after reportedly rejecting relief materials sent by the Federal Government following a deadly attack that left over 200 people feared killed and scores abducted.
The items, which included mats, buckets and school bags, were delivered by a delegation said to be acting on behalf of the government.
However, in a video obtained on Monday, grieving residents were seen rejecting the items, describing them as insensitive to the magnitude of the tragedy that has befallen the community.
“We don’t need these things,” some of the residents were heard saying. “What we want is security and the return of our people.”
The residents insisted that their immediate priority was the rescue of at least 176 women and children abducted during the attack, as well as improved security to prevent further assaults.
LEADERSHIP reports that many of the abducted victims were wives and children of those killed in attack, worsening the humanitarian situation in the area.
The outrage followed a recent attack by suspected terrorists believed to be linked to Boko Haram, which devastated Woro and neighbouring communities, including Kososo.
The development also comes days after a disturbing video surfaced showing the abducted victims pleading for urgent rescue.
In the footage, the victims—mostly women and children—appeared weak and in deplorable condition, as they appealed to authorities for intervention.
One of the abductors, speaking in Hausa, claimed responsibility for the attack and issued a warning.
“We are the ones who kidnapped the people of Woro and Kososo,” the terrorist said. “We are giving them a final opportunity to appeal to the government.”
The captives echoed desperate pleas in multiple languages.
One visibly weak young woman, speaking in English, said: “Please, we are begging you, this is the last opportunity they gave us. We have small children with us and some pregnant women. Please assist us.”
Another victim, speaking in Yoruba language, called on both Kwara and Oyo State governments to act swiftly, stressing that their survival depended on urgent intervention.
