Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has cautioned traditional rulers against financial mismanagement and what he described as excessive and unnecessary travel outside their domains.
He advised them to uphold integrity and remain committed to their responsibilities at the grassroots.
Governor Mohammed had yesterday distributed 14 SUVs, 14 Hilux vans and 14 buses to the emirs of the 14 newly created emirates. In addition, he gave 144 2017-Model Camry vehicles to the newly appointed district heads to improve their mobility and operations at the grassroots.
The governor gave the warning during the exercise at the Rilwanu Suleimanu Adamu Square, Government House, Bauchi.
He stressed the need for accountability and discipline in the discharge of their duties.
Mohammed expressed concern about reports of alleged embezzlement of public funds and absenteeism among some traditional rulers, noting that such practices undermine governance and erode public trust in traditional institutions.
According to him, traditional rulers occupy strategic positions in maintaining peace, fostering community development and supporting government policies, and must therefore lead by example.
“Your roles are critical to the stability of our communities. You must not be found wanting in matters of accountability and service. Mismanagement of resources and unnecessary travels at the expense of your duties will not be tolerated,” the governor said.
He further warned that his administration would not hesitate to take appropriate action against any traditional ruler found to be involved in misconduct, stressing that public office, whether elective or traditional, demands transparency and dedication.
Responding on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, assured the governor of their commitment to upholding the trust reposed in them and supporting the government’s efforts towards development and stability.
