George Groves has recommended that Anthony Joshua bring Mike Tyson into his training team to help prepare for his heavyweight clash with Tyson Fury on December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
The former super-middleweight world champion said Joshua needs a fresh tactical plan for the highly anticipated all-British fight. Fury is regarded as the favorite, and Groves believes Joshua should consider using a “peekaboo” style to close the gap against the taller Fury.
Both fighters enter the bout after recent victories. Fury stopped Polish veteran Mariusz Wach, while Joshua recovered from two knockdowns to defeat Kristian Prenga.
Groves, speaking to Grosvenor Sport, said Joshua could benefit from Tyson’s guidance because the former heavyweight champion built a celebrated career while often giving away height and reach. He suggested Joshua could crouch, slip, slide and dip forward more often, loading his legs to land hooks and uppercuts.
According to Groves, seeking advice from a fighter who succeeded as a shorter heavyweight makes sense for Joshua as he prepares for Fury.
