A broad-based national coalition has announced plans to endorse Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group, which spans civil society organisations, labour unions, professional bodies, and grassroots networks, described the move as an unprecedented political development.
National Secretary of the coalition, Tabuko Kennedy, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
Kennedy said the coalition, spearheaded by the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria, had expanded beyond the traditional civic space to include over 1,500 groups nationwide.
He noted that participants include human rights organisations, medical and legal professionals, artisan unions, community-based groups and labour leaders, reflecting what he called a wide national spread.
“The coalition represents a multi-sectoral backing that cuts across different strata of Nigerian society,” he said.
He added that a national convention has been scheduled for 17 May 2026, where members are expected to formally declare their support for the President’s re-election bid.
According to him, the gathering is projected to be the largest endorsement event in the country’s political history.
Kennedy further revealed that the coalition would present 20 million Nigerians’ signatures in support of Tinubu’s candidacy.
“The signatures were gathered through extensive nationwide mobilisation and reflect support across regions, professions and social groups,” he stated.
Organisers said their decision to back the President was based on what they described as tangible progress in economic reforms, governance and national stability.
They stressed that the involvement of artisans, market groups and labour unions signals a broader national consensus beyond the conventional civil society structure.
Political analysts, however, said the scale and diversity of the coalition indicate a shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, with growing influence from grassroots and professional constituencies.
Observers are now watching how the alliance will shape political narratives ahead of the 2027 elections.
Further details on the convention and participating groups are expected to be released in the coming days.
