Delta State Governor, Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has issued a stark warning to the contractor overseeing the ongoing refurbishment of Warri Stadium.

During an inspection of the facility on Tuesday, the Governor expressed considerable dissatisfaction with the contractor’s delays, highlighting that the original agreement stipulated completion by December. He specifically rejected certain aspects of the work, particularly the cladding, which he deemed “substandard and temporary.”

Oborevwori emphasised that the state government would not alter the existing contract but would ensure the contractor adhered strictly to the agreed specifications. He warned that any further failure to meet expectations would result in public scrutiny.

“We have paid for quality, not something that will fade in a few years. This cladding you are seeing is temporary; it will be removed,” he stated, insisting that only durable materials would be accepted. “If he fails us again, we will expose him,” the Governor added, identifying the firm as Peculiar Consults and urging the media to hold them accountable.

“I wasn’t smiling because we have an agreement with the contractor. The agreement is for the contractor to finish in December, and now we are in April,” Oborevwori stressed, underscoring the importance of adhering to timelines.

Despite his concerns regarding delays, the Governor commended the quality of the playing pitch, describing it as satisfactory and meeting expectations. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering high-quality projects and strict adherence to contractual agreements for the stadium’s refurbishment.

The Governor also explained that the decision to renovate the existing stadium, rather than construct a new one, was influenced by land limitations and the desire to preserve Warri Stadium’s identity. He noted that plans to relocate residents around the facility were rejected to protect their homes and livelihoods.

Looking ahead, Oborevwori expressed optimism that the upgraded stadium would be capable of hosting major sporting events, reiterating Delta State’s commitment to sports development. He also revealed plans to renovate the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba once the Warri project is complete.

Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation, praised the Governor’s dedication, calling the project a significant step towards revitalising football in Warri. Gusau specifically commended the pitch quality, noting it meets modern football standards, and assured the state government of the federation’s support in maintaining the facility. However, he indicated that the stadium might not be ready to host matches until September, suggesting the Nigeria national football team could play the first official match there upon completion.

Phillip Shaibu, Director-General of the National Institute for Sports, also lauded the project, describing the stadium’s turf as exceptional and a testament to the state’s commitment to sports infrastructure. He noted that the facility represents a collective effort and commitment, adding that the quality of work would endure.
