The Yobe State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has declared a 30-year-old convicted inmate, Dahiru Mohammed, wanted after he escaped from custody following a road accident involving a prison transport vehicle in the State.

In an official notice contained in a statement signed by Abdullahi Adamu, the State Command Public Relations Officer, shared on NCoS verified Facebook handle on Wednesday, the Command said the incident occurred on the morning of Monday, April 13, 2026, when a vehicle conveying inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Potiskum, to Damaturu was involved in a crash.

“Notice is hereby given to the general public regarding the escape of an inmate under the custody of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) Potiskum,” the statement read.

It explained that “during the resulting recovery efforts at the scene, the individual… managed to flee the custody of the escorting officers.”

The escaped inmate was identified as a convicted inmate with prison number J/1539/24. He was admitted into custody on November 29, 2024, with case number YBS/DT/HC/27/24.

According to the notice, Mohammed hails from Askiwari village via Tarmuwa and is of Fulani extraction. He was last seen along the Potiskum–Damaturu road.

The Service warned that the fugitive is dangerous and advised members of the public not to approach or attempt to apprehend him.

“The escaped individual is considered dangerous, and members of the public are advised not to approach or attempt to apprehend the suspect personally,” it stated.

The NCoS urged anyone with useful information about his whereabouts to report it immediately to the nearest police station or correctional facility, or to designated emergency lines.

“If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of this individual… please take immediate action,” the statement added.

It also warned that harbouring a fugitive is a criminal offence and called for public cooperation to ensure the suspect’s swift return to custody.
