Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina has acknowledged the formidable challenge awaiting his side in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, where they are set to face a formidable Aston Villa.
The Nigerian international, speaking to club media, emphasised that only a comprehensive team effort would be sufficient to overcome Unai Emery’s high-flying squad.
Forest secured their semi-final berth on Thursday night with a determined 1-0 home victory over FC Porto at the City Ground, sealing a 2-1 aggregate win for the Tricky Trees after drawing the first leg in Portugal. The decisive moment came in the second half when a well-executed counter-attack caught Porto off guard, igniting the home crowd.
While Forest battled past the Portuguese giants, Aston Villa delivered a resounding performance in their quarter-final, dismantling Italian side Bologna with a dominant 7-1 aggregate win. This display of attacking prowess has cemented their status as one of the tournament favourites.
Reflecting on the upcoming two-legged tie, Aina highlighted the importance of composure and maximum effort. “At the beginning of the season, these are the sort of games you want to play in,” he stated. “So we have to soak everything up and try our best. It will be a tough game against Aston Villa – we already know how good they are.”
The first leg is scheduled for Thursday, 30th April, at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, offering the home side an opportunity to establish an advantage. The return fixture will take place the following week at Villa Park, where Aston Villa will aim to leverage their home support to reach the final.
Forest manager Nuno EspÃrito Santo is expected to have a full squad at his disposal, with Aina likely to be crucial in containing Villa’s dangerous wide players. The defender, a regular starter this season, understands that defensive discipline will be paramount to keeping Forest’s European aspirations alive.
Kick-off times for both legs are yet to be confirmed, but anticipation is already mounting for what promises to be an all-English showdown with a coveted spot in the Europa League final at stake.
