Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has hailed the return of former governor and senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a major boost to the party’s structure and influence in the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf said Shekarau’s re-entry would reinforce the APC’s political base and improve its readiness for future elections in Kano.
He disclosed that preparations were underway for a formal reception in honour of the former governor, adding that a date would be announced in consultation with the party’s national leadership.
According to Yusuf, the APC continues to witness growing support across Kano, with increasing alignment from various quarters. He noted that the party remains a formidable political force with strong prospects in forthcoming elections.
The governor expressed optimism about the APC’s chances in future polls, attributing it to rising unity and improved coordination among party members.
He also assured supporters that efforts are ongoing to strengthen internal cohesion while expanding the party’s grassroots reach.
Yusuf urged party loyalists to remain steadfast and intensify mobilisation efforts as the next election cycle approaches.
Meanwhile, Shekarau had earlier confirmed his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In a letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, he said his resignation takes immediate effect.
The former governor explained that his decision followed extensive consultations with his political associates, noting that the move is part of a broader plan to continue his political career on a different platform.
He also expressed gratitude to party leaders at the ward level for their support during his time in the PDP and offered prayers for continued success in their leadership.
Political observers believe Shekarau’s return to the APC could reshape alignments in Kano as parties begin positioning ahead of the next round of elections.
