Nigeria’s sports sector is experiencing a significant resurgence, driven by sustained federal funding, strategic grassroots investments, and a renewed focus on athlete welfare, according to Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC).
Speaking on the Commission’s recent reforms, Hon. Olopade highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “consistent funding and unwavering support” as pivotal to the progress, particularly in athletics. “It has enabled us to refocus, rebuild, and reposition our systems for sustainable success,” he stated.
The NSC boss emphasised deliberate efforts to nurture young talent, citing emerging athletes like Rosemary Nwankwo, Miracle Ezechukwu, and Jacinta Lawrence as examples. The “Invited Junior Athletes initiative” and national trials for approximately 600 diaspora athletes are further expanding opportunities.
Athlete welfare has also been prioritised, with grants paid twice in the last six months, including $5,000 for elite athletes and ₦3 million for young talents. The Commission is also covering school fees for promising future stars.
“This is the kind of system that builds confidence, loyalty, and excellence,” Olopade affirmed, reiterating the NSC’s commitment to a sustainable sports ecosystem fostering inclusivity, performance, and national pride.
