A coalition of stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State yesterday called on the party’s leadership to prioritise competence, credibility, and character in selecting candidates, particularly for the Edo South Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general election.
The group stressed that the party’s success in the forthcoming polls would largely depend on its ability to present candidates with proven capacity, grassroots appeal, and integrity.
On behalf of the coalition, Ambassador Igbinovia Usifo said the era of sentimental or weak candidacy must give way to merit-based selection if the APC hopes to make significant electoral gains in Edo State.
He said, “We urge the leadership of the APC in Edo State to place competence, quality, and character above all other considerations. The Edo South Senatorial seat requires a candidate with proven political depth and public trust,” Usifo stated.
The coalition threw its weight behind Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, describing him as a tested and prepared leader with the experience and network required to secure victory for the party in Edo South.
“Ize-Iyamu is not only articulate and experienced, but he also possesses a deep understanding of the political landscape and a strong grassroots connection that positions him as the right choice for the Edo South Senatorial ticket,” the coalition said.
The stakeholders further commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for what they described as purposeful and people-oriented leadership, noting that his administration’s strides in infrastructure, youth empowerment, and governance have strengthened public confidence in the APC.
They added that aligning the governor’s performance with a credible senatorial candidate like Ize-Iyamu would create the needed synergy for electoral success, urging party leaders to close ranks and adopt a strategic approach ahead of the 2027 election .
