Youth members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are set to stage coordinated protests in Lagos, Ogun and Jigawa states today, intensifying pressure on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) amid a deepening leadership crisis within the party.
The demonstrations, organised under the hashtag #AmupitanMustGo, are expected to take place at INEC offices across the three states, with organisers describing the action as part of a broader campaign to demand accountability and adherence to due process.
Balarabe Rufai, ADC’s national youth leader, disclosed the plans in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, where he shared flyers announcing the protests, tagged “Operation Occupy INEC.”
According to Rufai, the Lagos protest is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. at Yaba College of Technology, while the Ogun gathering is billed for 11 a.m. at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) office in Abeokuta. Details of the Jigawa protest were not immediately clear as of press time.
The planned demonstrations follow an earlier protest by ADC youths at the INEC office in Lagos, where participants carried placards demanding the resignation of the commission’s chairman, Joash Amupitan, and the restoration of the party’s leadership under David Mark.
Rufai described the protests as peaceful civic action aimed at defending democratic principles.
“This is a call for accountability, not chaos,” he said in an earlier statement, insisting that “the rule of law must be respected” and due process upheld in handling the party’s internal disputes.
The youth mobilisation comes weeks after prominent opposition figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, joined other political heavyweights in a similar “Occupy INEC” protest in Abuja on April 8. Others present at the demonstration included Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, Rauf Aregbesola and Dino Melaye.
