Adamawa State government has destroyed over 70 cows at the Jimeta Modern Abattoir after the animals were found to have consumed poisonous grass in parts of the Fufore local government area and the neighbouring Cameroon.
The commissioner for Livestock and Aquaculture Development, Alhaji Salihu Idris, disclosed this yesterday during a visit to the facility in Jimeta with journalists.
He said the action underscored the government’s commitment to safeguarding public health and urged the residents to buy meat only from government-approved abattoirs.
According to him, the directive to destroy the affected meat was issued by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri as part of efforts to protect the well-being of the state’s population.
Earlier, the permanent secretary in the ministry, Dr Mohammed Aminu Suleiman, confirmed that the affected livestock had ingested toxic grass, rendering the meat unsafe for consumption.
He added that samples of the suspected poisonous grass would be forwarded to Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital for laboratory analysis and expert guidance.
Also, the director of Veterinary Services in the ministry, Dr Batholomew Nyalas, said the discovery was made through routine monitoring by ministry staff, emphasising that the intervention was necessary to protect public health across the state.
